Did You Know…
Nappy Facts
- More than 3,000 tonnes of disposable nappies are thrown away each year in Carmarthenshire.
- This costs around £60 per tonne or a total of £180,000 per year.
- Disposable nappies take around 500 years to decompose.
- Perhaps re-usable nappies aren’t such a bad idea!
- This can save around £500 for a parent who has a second child.
Home Composting
- Approximately one third of household waste can be used to create compost.
- Examples from the Home include (raw) vegetable peelings and fruit waste, tea, coffee, crushed eggshells, biodegradable nappy liners (including waste), scrap paper, cardboard e.g. egg boxes, toilet rolls.
- Examples from the Garden include chopped woody stems, twigs, grass and hedge cuttings, hay, Autumn leaves, flowers and herbivore (e.g. hamster, rabbit) droppings and bedding.
- You can use your compost as a Soil Conditioner, Potting Mixeture and Mulch or Top Dressing.
- The Composting process can take from 6-18 months, depending on the time of year and the materials used. When ready, the materials will not be recognisable and the resultant compost is similar to a soil like substance, with an earthy smell.
