In the early 1990’s, a landowner planted up a new woodland area on ex open cast land between Llandybie Rd. and Caerbryn Rd. He included walks for the benefit of the community within the woods, as long as the community maintained them. Over the years, they became difficult to use & blocked with brambles.
They’ve now been opened up again and provide a lovely Sunday morning walk (or any other day, of course).
It takes around 40 minutes at a leisurely pace to go around this circular walk. There is another section which hasn’t been cleared yet, which will add another 10 minutes or so.
If you make a start from Neuadd Goffa (Point 1), turn left to Penygroes Square & then right towards Llandybie. Just outside Penygroes, turn right up a gravelled road. The entrance to the woods is on the left-hand side.
The cleared path is easy to walk, although there are a few humps & holes, so walking shoes would help avoid twisted ankles.
There is always a lot to see, but it might not jump out at you, so it helps to spend a little time exploring.
There’s an old picnic table on the way round if you fancy a sit down and some nice views to stop & admire.
Once you get to Point 2 on the map, you may have to search around a bit for the entrance to the next section. It’s next to a dilapidated picnic table. It’s a pity some unthinking people throw rubbish in this area. The next section can be a bit wet at times, but is easily walkable.
The entrance onto Caerbryn Rd. goes over a small stream and down a bank.
Turn right past the school, then right along Waterloo Rd. back to Neuadd Goffa.
