This is mostly an easy walk, but with several stiles, a couple of gates and one steep bit of path. It takes about an hour and a half. We started at Garnfoel Rd.
At the fork towards the top of Garnfoel Rd., bear right and follow the path to the left (Path 34).
Follow the path along the hedge, then across a stile.
There are good views from the next field. The weather threatened rain on the day we went, but it stayed dry. At the end of the field, follow the drive of the farmhouse to the left and then turn right on Caerbryn Rd.
Follow Caerbryn Rd. for around 300 metres. Just past a nicely laid-out bungalow and grounds on the right, turn right onto Path 36. This path is a bit steep at first. On the right, you’ll see an old settling pond from the open-cast mine which is now home to an abundance of wildlife, including nesting moorhens and little grebe in the spring.
Follow the path over a stile. The lanscape here is recovering well after many years of open-cast mining.
You’ll eventually reach a series of gates sometimes used to hold sheep waiting for transport. If the sheep are there, the shepherd should be on hand to let you through. He was happy to stop for a chat. We couldn’t find any sign of the Right of Way that is supposed to be on the right here. I’ll have to chase that up. Once through the gates, you’re on to Maesglas Rd. for 100m or so. The start of Path 33 is over the stile on the right. This is, perhaps, 50m from where it’s shown on the OS map.
Across the field on the left you’ll see the next stile. There are nice views across the Amman Valley here. Hopefully, the scar of the gas pipeline won’t last long. The stile is a bit of a struggle if you’ve got little legs !
Following the hedge, the next stile is at the other end of the field. Then turn to your right and cross the field to a gap in the woodland. Straight through this, you pass the playground at the end of Spien Road.
